About Cosmetic Dentistry in Cabo San Lucas.
From Cosmetic Dental Makeovers to Margaritas,
A Dental Vacation to Cabo Can’t be Beat!
Cosmetic Dentistry is a much used and abused
term these days. Not recognized as a specialty in the United
States – many dentists in the USA have been quick to
capitalize on the term over the past decade using it as a
marketing tool for their practices much in the same way some
plain old general dentists now call their clinics Dental
Spas.
Regular General Dentistry is traditionally
concerned with drilling and filling pathologic (read
cavities) conditions in the mouth with an emphasis on
function. Cosmetic Dentistry is literally all about the art
of the smile - going one step further in emphasizing
aesthetics by creating movie star smiles.
A beautiful smile is a powerful, confidence
boosting, attractive attribute to have. Celebrities,
politicians and CEO’s all know it – and anyone can have it
in as little as two or three visits to a good cosmetic
dentist.
Some people are born with bad teeth. Some
have crooked ones, teeth with humongous gaps between them,
teeth stacked in front of others, or teeth that have
deteriorated because of poor hygiene, smoking, alcoholism
and drug abuse.
While an endodontist can do a root canal or
make a new crown – it takes an experienced Cosmetic Dentist
(also known as a Cosmetic Oral Rehabilitation Specialist) to
be able to create a totally new smile when one has severe
dental problems as noted above.
New porcelain crown tooth colors often have
to match old healthy teeth, the arches need to be aligned
and matched both aesthetically and functionally for proper
bite and other considerations.
Often a makeover involves root canals, new
crowns, some veneers, implants and perhaps a bridge so the
Cosmetic Dentist has to be not only a multi-disciplined
dentist but also an aesthetician as well. Whitenings become
a challenge as new porcelain teeth do not react the same as
natural teeth to the bleaching process.
In Cosmetic Dentistry – experience and proper
training matters. In the USA – Cosmetic Dentistry is not
recognized as a separate specialty by the American Dental
Association. As a result - any dentist can wake up one
morning, hang up a Cosmetic Dentist sign and begin
practicing – on you.
In Mexico, cosmetic dentistry is a specialty
and additional curriculum and certification for the
specialty is offered in some dental colleges. Cabo Cosmetic
Dental's Dr. Jorge Arciga is a Certified Cosmetic Full-Mouth
Oral Rehabilitation Specialist Dentist who performed dental
makeovers for over 30 years.
Back in the USA, dental insurance often
covers only one crown and root canal per year, so if you
need 7 or all 27 teeth done – you won’t be able to smile for
many years. Typical full-mouth restorations in the USA cost
between $40,000 and $100,000us depending on where you have
the work done and what’s involved.
At Cabo Cosmetic Dental the cost runs from
$10,000 to $20,000us for the same work, using the same
materials ordered from the same dental supply catalogues as
US dentists order from.
This season Cabo Cosmetic dental in partnership with Cabo
Fiesta Marina Resort, Tesoro Resort and Cabo Cush Hotel, is
offering
Free Hotel or
Flights to Cabo
for Cosmetic Dental Makeover patients. Other hotel and
flight incentives are available for smaller treatment
patients as well.
Dental History
From Wooden Choppers to Dental Vacations in Cabo
Over
a hundred years ago, most people lost all their permanent
teeth by the time they were forty-five if they weren’t
already dead from cholera, typhoid, smallpox, influenza,
tuberculosis or other killers. The average life span back
then was only forty-five years.
In the past, a pair of pliers was as common a
tool for dentists as as scissors and razors were for
barbers. The red and white striped barber pole symbolized
blood and sanitation and barbers also pulled teeth. Over a
hundred years ago - If you had a really good dentist, you
might get a set of wooden teeth made to replace your rotting
ones. Anesthesia – was whiskey in the US, tequila in Mexico.
Even though dentistry as a specialty existed in Egypt as far
back as 3000 B.C., there was not much progress in the field
until the foundation of the world’s first dental college in
Baltimore, Maryland, in 1840. Dentistry as a separate
medical field was taught at the National University in
Mexico beginning around the same time. Since those times
there have been many improvements in treatment and
prevention.
A dentist today is just like any other physician in his
training. A cardiologist operates on your heart; a surgeon
on your bones or organs, a dental medical doctor specializes
in your teeth, gums, jawbone and diseases of the mouth and
throat. The health of your teeth can affect the health of
your entire body. Diseases originating in your mouth are
highly contagious, can cause problems in your throat,
nervous and blood systems for example. And can shorten your
life or kill you.
Many people visit Cabo, taking dental vacations with their
savings on dental work performed in Cabo vs. the high cost
of treatments back home. They come for everything from a
root canal or some crowns or implants to full-mouth cosmetic
makeovers. Doctor Jorge Arciga (are-see-ga) of Cabo Cosmetic
Dental has been serving the local foreign community and
dental tourists for over 30 years. They save on average
$2,000 to as much as $40,000 on full-mouth cosmetic
restorations.
In his mid-50’s, he still works 6 day weeks
(most Mexicans do), and works mostly alone or with another
doctor assisting in his small clinic in downtown Cabo near
the hillside community of Pedregal.
Like Geppetto’s workshop – his clinic is a
visual overload of dental lab tools, impressions and models
of teeth – all within reaching distance of his dental chair.
He works efficiently making temporaries right before your
eyes, saving precious time that otherwise would be spent
sending things out to a lab.
Cabo Cosmetic Dental is one of the few
clinics in Cabo where the dentist speaks excellent English.
He was so committed to serving the English speaking
community, he obtained a Teaching English degree after
dental college.
So between drilling and filling, you can
carry on a conversation with the doc about where’s a great
Mexican restaurant, the best margaritas, and where to go for
big game fishing.
Sedation or Sleep Dentistry in Cabo, Baja Mexico
Cabo’s for margaritas, marlin and dental work while you
dream…
Government medical authorities in many
countries have applied strict regulations and controls to
protect patients from deaths due to anesthesia - because
believe it or not – over sedation is the number one cause of
accidental deaths in hospitals in the USA and worldwide.
In Mexico, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and
full anesthesia can only be administered by a doctor of
anesthesiology in a full hospital environment that has the
back-up facilities and personnel necessary to care for fully
sedated patients. Medical and dental clinics cannot use
nitrous – they generally use sleep dentistry or IV sedation
instead.
Other
reasons for the tight restrictions on the use of nitrous
oxide in Mexico are that studies have shown that medical
staff, who are subject to constant exposure to nitrous,
develop symptoms of Parkinsons disease over time such as
loss of motor control in their hands.
In the USA –
control is so lax – dental assistants often administer this
sedation. Then, there’s the potential for abuse. In the
USA where nitrous oxide is more widely available – it often
turns up at rock concerts and motor speedway events being
sold in balloons as a recreational drug.
Sleep Dentistry does not mean that a patient will be
“knocked out” or unconscious, rather that the sedation will
put patients in a dreamlike state, alleviating
anxieties. Patients generally remain conscious during
procedures and can respond to the doctors instructions as in
“turn you head,” “ sit up,” etc. while under sedation.
Overall, little will be felt or remembered from the
procedure.
Get it over quickly Doc…
How many times has your dentist back home
required you to visit his office and an endodontists office
3-4 times for a root canal and a crown? With sedation
dentistry – Dental Tourists can get a full-mouth (27
crowns) done in 4-5 visits in little over a week on a Dental
Vacation. But it’s always good to add a few more days if
your schedule allows for more partying and clinic visits for
final bite checks and adjustments before heading home.
Many Dental Tourists travel from all over the
USA, Canada & Europe to receive treatment in Los Cabos.
They do so because Cabo has some of the only dental clinics
in Mexico that offer a full array of anesthesia.
Sleep dentistry,
also called "sedation dentistry," is a term that
refers to the use of anesthesia during dental
procedures such as
tooth implants,
root canals, and tooth extraction. These
sedations are often used during procedures that require an
extensive amount of time, as well as for patients who
exhibit dental phobia or have difficulty controlling
their movements. This may include children, people with
Parkinsons, MS or Palsy.
Scared of
the Dentist? Don’t be a Dental Avoider.
It is estimated that approximately 30 to 40
million Americans avoid seeing the dentist because of
dental anxiety or dental phobia. People with
dental anxiety have fears that are often greatly
exaggerated. Dental phobia is a more serious condition.
People with this condition are terrified and panic-stricken
when it comes time to see the dentist.
Sedation Dentistry and Dental Tourism
Candidates
You may be a candidate for sedation dentistry
or a potential dental tourist if you exhibit any of the
following characteristics:
-
Dental phobia
-
Dental anxiety
-
Difficulty controlling movement due to
conditions like cerebral palsy or Parkinson's disease
-
Work time and money constraints that
prohibit multiple clinic visits making it cost effective
to take a dental vacation.
Sedation options in Los Cabos:
1.
Oral
Sedative: Sub-lingual (under tongue) med., administered and
monitored by the doctor and staff in clinic:
Cost: Up to $250 in the USA, generally little
or no charge in some Cabo clinics. I’ve experienced
it myself and recommend it.
2. Intravenous (IV) sedation: Administered
and monitored by an anesthesiologist in clinic: $300 to
$500usd
Very good but used for only the most dental
sensitive patients. Requires additional staff to help
monitor and move patient as necessary.
3. Nitros Oxide or General Anesthesia:
Administered and monitored by an anesthesiologist and staff
in a local hospital: $1,600usd. If an overnight stay in
the hospital is necessary add $400usd.
This is often necessary for physically
handicapped patients who have uncontrollable body motor
movements.

visiting Cabo San Lucas, Baja California. It’s a
world-class vacation destination and is only 1.5 to 5 hours

Metal Fillings Make a Mouth Look Like Pancho
Villa's Ammunition Belt
Dentistry
has come a long way in the last few decades.
Dentists have porcelain caps which are used to face the
surface of discolored teeth, and high tech filling materials
which color match your original teeth so when you laugh or
smile your mouth doesn’t look like Mexican General Pancho
Villa’s ammunition belt.
Those
old metal amalgam
fillings
have been accused of
causing mercury poisoning
and should be removed and replaced with modern tooth color
matching composites. With teeth whitening you can truly have
a mouthful of pearly whites just like a movie star.
Mouthwashes
and mints only temporarily alleviate the symptoms. Beware;
some mouthwashes even have sweeteners in them that feed the
plaque making a bad situation worse. Oral B – the real dark,
almost black mouthwash – is the strongest, germ killer on
the shelf and is often prescribed by dentists for use to
help cure periodontal disease. If you have any kind of oral
infection - Orab B (dark) will help alleviate the symptoms.
A high percentage of the population is afraid of seeing the
dentist, and are good candidates for
Sleep or Sedation dentistry.
Some are scared to death of the dentist and have to be
literally pushed through the clinic door by their loved-one.
When folks say they “Hate dentists,” what
they’re really saying is that they fear the pain of a
toothache, the pain of treating it, and the pain of paying
for it. But look at it in perspective… a simple cleaning or
cavity filling is a lot quicker and cheaper than a root
canal or surgery.
A trip to the dentist need not be equated
with a trip to an abortion clinic.
A dental vacation to Cabo San Lucas will be
fun, relaxing, and you’ll save serious money on dental care
as prices are but a fraction of those back home. For example
– root canals and crowns are $400-550US here in Cabo vs.
$800-3,000 in fancy clinics in bigger US cities. The low
cost of dental care in Cabo will often more than pay for a
vacation with patients saving on average from $2,000 to over
$40,000 (on full dental makeovers).
Over 2.5 million tourists visit Cabo annually and airfares
from the US and Canada are low ranging from $200 to $550 r/t
from most major US cities. Visit Cabo Cosmetic Dental's

The website
www.cabocosmeticdental.com
has a video and photo galleries of Cabo, plus facs and
information on taking a dental vacation.
Over the past ten years, I've had
consultations, tests and treatments for myself here in Los
Cabos from cardiac and ear specialists, and an expert
ophthalmologist with seven years of training. I've also had
a fractured leg cared for, kidney stones removed, plastic
surgery, a seasonal virus or 2, numerous crowns and a couple
of bridges - all for a fraction of the cost back home. Brand
name prescription medicines and generics - a pittance.
Why so inexpensive? Rents, salaries for
medical assistants, little or no administrative costs, and
the overall cost of living are low in Mexico. The Mexican
government subsidizes medical and dental college tuitions
eliminating a huge financial burden most new American
doctors are saddled with.
‘Mexican Doctors Are Required to Perform a
Year's Public Service After Graduation’
Graduating doctors have to do a year service
in a public clinic in repayment of their goverment's medical
education subsidy - making basic healthcare free for all
Mexicans. The US Congress should take note... After their
year of public service they take additional specialist
training or go into private practice.
In Mexico patients can choose to go to
inexpensive government hospitals and clinics or pay more at
private facilities. Medical supplies and equipment come from
the same suppliers that US doctors purchase from.
Bottom line - You'll save time and money, on
your medical or dental care, by coming to Cabo where the
doctors are more than happy to see you. As a healthcare
tourist, you'll get priority appointments. As one Cabo doc
told me: "I love American and Canadian patients - They show
up, on time, they pay, and they don't complain about the
prices!"
